Ambrosius Paul Speiser was a Swiss engineer and scientist who spent much of his career at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) but also worked for IBM between 1956 and 1966. Between 1950 and 1955 while at ETH he worked with Eduard Stiefel sent Heinz Rutishauser on the development of ERMETH the first computer in Switzerland.

Per Georg Scheutz died this month.

Died: May 22, 1873

Per Georg Scheutz was a Swedish inventor who designed and constructed the Scheutzian Calculation Engine between 1837 and 1843 with his son Edvard Scheutz. The engine was based on Charles Babbage's Difference Engine, and while much simpler in design Scheutz managed to construct and sell several engines.

Luigi Federico Menabrea died this month.

Died: May 24, 1896

Luigi Federico Menabrea was the Prime Minister of Italy 1867-1869 and wrote the first description of Charles Babbage's Analytical Engine "Notions sur la machine analytique de M. Charles Babbage" in 1842. His publication on Babbage's engine was translated into English and extended by Ada Lovelace in 1843.

Ohno Taiichi was a Japanese industrial engineer and businessman. He is considered to be the father of the Toyota Production System, which inspired Lean Manufacturing in the U.S and Agile Software Development.
